C-FAHR Research Rewards 2025
C-FAHR is accepting proposals grad student/trainee research awards (up to $2,500), as well as small-grant, quick-funds (less than $1,000).
All proposals should detail activities that promote the development of research related to families and health at the University of Utah. Proposals must address at least one of the C-FAHR priority areas:
- Families dealing with chronic illnesses
- Early life experiences and later life health
- Community-relevant research that promotes health and well-being.
- Cultures of health
- Methods and statistics oriented toward families and health.
Only current C-FAHR affiliates are eligible to apply for these awards. Membership applications are accepted on a rolling basis and will be reviewed at least monthly. For membership instructions see https://cfahr.utah.edu/membership/index.php.
Grad Student or Postdoctoral Award
Graduate student or postdoctoral affiliates may request funds to assist in the development or execution of an independent research project, such as a master’s thesis or dissertation.
Funding Level: Graduate Student/Trainee Awards are limited to $2,500
Budget Guidelines: Funds may be used to cover expenses related to data or software needs, participant payment, research-related travel such as field work, equipment, or other reasonable costs associated with the proposed research. Funds cannot be used toward a graduate student stipend or hourly wages of the PI. Funds can be used to cover registration fees for training workshops relevant to the project.
To Apply: The graduate student or postdoctoral fellow must serve as the PI for the proposal, and both the student and their faculty advisor must be current affiliates of C-FAHR at the time of the application. Prepare a 2-page statement describing the funding request. It should be single spaced with minimum font size of 11 point. Longer proposals or appendices will not be reviewed. The statement should include: a project title, a succinct description of the project including specific aims, methods, a timeline for start and finish, budget and justification. Where applicable, please indicate whether other funds and resources are available to help with the project, and if so, the approximate dollar amount(s) and source(s). All applications must include a separate letter of support from faculty mentor/sponsor.
Timeline: Proposals should be submitted electronically to Marisa.Brunsvik@utah.edu by 11:59pm on April 1, 2024 (with decisions and funding available by May 1).
Small-Grant, Quick Funds
These funds are designed to help individual faculty researchers and research teams with proposal development and competitiveness (i.e. graphic design, editor, quick pilot work, expert consultation to review proposal) or to address unforeseen research expenses. This award is designed to be flexible and fast to serve teams’ needs. Awards will typically be small.
Funding Level: less than $1,000
To Apply: Only faculty-level C-FAHR members are eligible to apply. Submit a funding request to Marisa.Brunsvik@utah.edu. Requests should be one-page or less, describing the need for funds and how they will contribute to the completion or competitiveness of an impending grant proposal.
Timeline: Rolling submission, accepted anytime between now and May 2025.

All proposals will be reviewed by members of the C-FAHR executive committee who will make final decisions based on the project’s innovation, scientific merit, collaboration, and likelihood of success. Preference will be given to new projects and/or to C-FAHR members who have not been funded by the Research Fund in the past. Budgets may be reduced depending on the recommendations of the review team. Unused funds must be returned to C-FAHR after one year. A no-cost extension may be requested two months before the one-year deadline. If funded, a final progress report at the conclusion of the funding period is required, including how funds were spent. Financial support from C-FAHR must be acknowledged in all publications. A research presentation and/or poster at a C-FAHR sponsored event is required.
